State Rep. Terrance Carroll (D-Denver) was elected Assistant House Majority Leader early Tuesday afternoon, a victory widely believed to set up him to become House Majority Leader next year if the Democrats retain control.
Carroll defeated state Rep. Paul Weissmann (D-Louisville). Exect vote numbers were not released, but Weissmann said he expected the margin of victory to be within 1-2 votes.
Carroll told reporters after the vote that assuming the Democrats retain their House majority in the fall elections, he will seek to succeed current House Majority Leader Alice Madden (D-Boulder), who is term-limited.
Weissmann was widely considered the most knowledgeable about floor procedure and political manuevering inside the Capitol.
But Carroll was seen by many -- including Weissmann himself -- as being very experienced at candidate recuitment, fundraising, and other party-building activities that take place outside the Capitol.
