A new Quinnipiac University poll surveying likely Colorado voters released Sunday shows presumptive Republican nominee John McCain in "a dead heat" with his Democratic rival, Barack Obama as Democrats are gathering in Denver for their party's national convention.
According to a survey, McCain is leading 47 percent to 46 percent. A similar poll released July 24 showed McCain leading Obama 46 percent to 44 percent. A June 26 survey showed Obama with a 49 percent to 44 percent lead.
"Colorado is one of the most important battleground states that will decide the presidency as Sen. John McCain and Sen. Barack Obama slug it out nose to nose. If the national election is close in November, a handful of votes in Colorado will be decisive," Peter A. Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute, said in a statement. "Right now, independent voters are split with 46 percent for Sen. McCain and 44 percent for Sen. Obama.
