Five candidates have expressed interest in replacing Karen Middleton on the State Board of Education, according to the Aurora Sentinel.
Jane Goff, teacher's union president for Jefferson County Schools; Guillermo Serna from Commerce City; Monisha Merchant from Lakewood; and Dan Morris of Arapahoe County will vie for the CD-7 SBOE seat, said CD-7 Chair Ann Knollman.
Knollman will head the vacancy committee that will appoint Middleton's replacement on Feb. 16.
Burke Beu, a former CU regents candidate from CD-4 and a current resident of Commerce City, has also asked to enter the race, though he hasn't formally sent in a letter of intent, Knollman said. A sixth candidate, Shawn Bradley of Jefferson County, initially entered his name but withdrew on Tuesday, Knollman said.
The position opened up when Middleton was appointed on Feb. 10 to former state Rep. Michael Garcia's 42nd District seat.
