U.S. Sen. John McCain: Getty Images PhotoJohn McCain's presidential campaign has spurned an invitation from James Dobson to visit Focus on the Family's headquarters in Colorado Springs, according to political columnist Robert Novak.
From Novak's weekly syndicated column on Sunday:
Dobson has indicated he can't support McCain for president. His opposition reflects continued resistance to the prospective presidential nominee among Christian conservatives. They take issue with McCain's positions on stem cell research, immigration and global warming, as well as his past sponsorship of campaign finance reform.
Many of Dobson's followers are looking beyond 2008 to seek a new leader of the conservative movement for the 2012 election.
In a statement to PolitickerCO.com, Focus on the Family senior vice-president for public policy Tom Minnery said, "We’ve had conversations with the McCain staff, and they haven’t been productive."
A Focus on the Family spokesperson said she didn't know any specifics about what was discussed in those conversations, nor when the conversations took place.
A phone message left with McCain's campaign seeking comment were not immediately returned Monday.
