The National Republican Congressional Committee reserved more than $1 million in TV spots Tuesday, the Fort Collins Coloradoan is reporting.
That trumps the $667,000 put into the race by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee last month on behalf of Betsy Markey, who has overcome early skepticism to pose a serious challenge to incumbent U.S. Rep. Marilyn Musgrave (R-Fort Morgan).
Spending is well ahead of where it was at this point in the race two years ago, when Musgrave and Democratic opponent Angie Paccione spent more than $9 million combined.
The NRCC put $1.8 million into that 2006 campaign -- but this election cycle, the GOP political committee has been strapped for cash. The NRCC had $14 million on hand as of the end of July; the DCCC, in comparison, had $56 million in the bank, the Coloradoan article stated.
The DCCC put no money into the 2006 race. But DCCC Chair and U.S. Rep. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) told the Coloradoan that it's a different story this time around.
"I expect to see the DCCC very involved there," he said to the Coloradoan.
