Three weeks of talk later, still no CO-5 debates scheduled
By Jeremy Pelzer, PolitickerCO.com ReporterMINNEAPOLIS--Ever since the Aug. 12 primary election, Doug Lamborn and Hal Bidlack have repeatedly said they want to debate each other.
But the debate schedules for the two 5th Congressional District nominees remain empty after Lamborn, the Republican incumbent, bowed out last week from a debate scheduled for Oct. 1.
Lamborn told PolitickerCO.com on Wednesday, though, that while "we're not going to do a ton of debates" he is "definitely going to debate because I've challenged Mr. Bidlack to debate.
"And I know he wants to - it's not like I have to twist his arm," Lamborn said. "We just have to work out the details. There absolutely will be at least one debate, if not more."
But Lamborn quickly added that with more than two months before Election Day, "we have plenty of time" to schedule a debate.
In the meantime, Bidlack's campaign is waiting, said Christy Le Lait, spokesperson for the Democratic nominee.
"At this point, our hope is that his people really are working on a date," Le Lait said. "I'm still not clear who they're working on them with, because they haven't been talking to us."
According to KRDO-TV, Lamborn told the League of Women Voters last Friday that he would be too busy to attend the group's Oct. 1 debate at Colorado College - the only debate planned in the 5th Congressional District so far.

Let's Make Lamborn Debate Bidlack
I have started a petition to encourage our district's representative, Doug Lamborn, to debate his challenger Lt. Col. Hal Bidlack. If Rep. Lamborn has the best ideas, he should be happy to have a public forum in which he can present them juxtaposed with Lt. Col. Bidlack's.

As an undecided voter,I was really looking forward to a debate. After all that buzz after the primary I figured a debate was soon to happen.
There aren't really two months before voters have to decide -- mail-in ballots are sent out in a month and more than a third of all votes are cast at that time. Seems like Lamborn is dragging his feet on purpose. Why won't he debate? Maybe Lamborn thinks he'll lose if he debates in time for the mail-in voters to hear him and Bidlack.
That's just not fair to the citizens in our district. We have a right to hear what both candidates have to say in an open debate. We're being deprived of the chance to make an informed decision.
