Udall leads Schaffer 43 percent to 38 percent, the poll found -- within one point of the poll's margin of error.

Other recent polls have given Udall as much as a 10-point lead over Schaffer.

The Post's poll was conducted by Mason-Dixon Research among 625 registered voters between Sept. 29 and Oct. 1, according to the Post. The survey's margin of error was +/- 4 percentage points.

Of those polled, 77 percent said the economy was the issue most important to them this election.

Amid a barrage of negative advertising, both candidates' unfavorable ratings increased since a Post poll in August: Udall's unfavorable went from 23 percent to 26 percent, while Schaffer's increased from 25 percent to 43 percent.
