Colorado Gov. Bill Ritter is taking credit for Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama's talk of a "new energy economy" during Tuesday's presidential debate, the Durango Herald is reporting.
Ritter, who has regularly been touting the phrase ever since his 2006 gubernatorial campaign, said Wednesday that he introduced it to Obama while the two were campaigning together earlier this year, according to the Herald.
Before then, Obama had been talking about "green jobs," but Ritter said he urged the U.S. senator from Illinois to think more broadly, according to the Herald.
During the debate, Obama said that "if we create a new energy economy, we can create five million new jobs, easily, here in the United States."
The phrase was coined by Ritter adviser Melody Harris during the 2006 gubernatorial campaign.
