In the 1979 movie comedy the Jerk, the main character, Navin Johnson (played by Steve Martin), responds with wild excitement when the new phone books come and have his name in them.
“The new phone books are here! The new phone books are here!” Navin cries, acting kind of like a …well…jerk.
The Inside Edge was reminded of this movie when we got news that Marc Holtzman is endorsing Wil Armstrong in the 6th Congressional District race.
Holtzman didn’t just endorse him either. He sent email out on Wil’s behalf.
Spiffy.
“I don’t think it’s helpful to Wil. It benefits nobody,” said one Arapahoe GOP source. “Marc’s really not very popular in the Republican Party. He couldn’t even get on the ballot when he ran for Governor. He had all the money in the world, but just couldn’t get it done.”
Ironically, Holtzman cites in his email supporting him, Young Wil’s ability to get elected AND get things done as a prime reason for supporting his candidacy.
“Too many career politicians are concerned about getting elected,” Holtzman writes “and reelected - than with actually getting things done. And friends, it’s time to get things done again. That’s why I’m personally supporting Wil Armstrong as our next Congressman from the 6th Congressional District.”
It’s ironic because of Holtzman could neither get elected nor get things done because of his aforementioned problems getting on the ballot.
And getting on the ballot is about as easy as getting your name in the phone book.
“I’m not sure who they are courting in sending that out,” said one 6th CD Republican from Douglas County who knows Holtzman and has supported him.
Maybe Armstrong’s team thinks that any news is good news. Or maybe the price they paid in getting Holtzman’s endorsement was that they allowed him to send out email with his name in print reminding people that he hasn’t moved to Pennsylvania or Russia.
“This is the kind of spontaneous publicity - your name in print, that makes people!” says Martin’s character about his inclusion in the phone book. “I’m in print! Things are going to start happening to me now.”
As another Martin character, in another parody might say:
“Naw.”
