State Rep. Larry Liston (R-Colorado Springs) on Wednesday said that unmarried teenage parents -- male or female -- are "sluts" who have "no sense of shame," the Colorado Springs Gazette is reporting.
"In my parents’ day and age, they (unmarried teenage parents) were sent away, they were shunned, they were called what they are. There was at least a sense of shame,” Liston said, according to the Gazette. “There’s no sense of shame today. Society condones it. . . . I think it’s wrong. They’re sluts. And I don’t mean just the women. I mean the men, too.”
Liston made the comments at a Republican legislative caucus meeting in Denver during a discussion about Colorado's high teen pregnancy rate.
Rep. Stella Garza Hicks (R-Colorado Springs) told the Gazette after the meeting that she was "disturbed" and "offended" by Liston's use of the word "slut."
“I feel that he owes the apology somewhere, whether it’s to the same group that he spoke to before or someone else,” Garza Hicks told the newspaper. “There’s got to be something brought out of this that it doesn’t happen again.”
