CD-2 Democratic candidate Will Shafroth's campaign is alleging that primary rival Jared Polis' campaign may have illegally obtained Shafroth's list of supporters' e-mails.
A Polis spokesperson told PolitickerCO on Monday that the campaign denies the allegations.
In an e-mail sent to Shafroth supporters, Shafroth spokesperson Lynea Hansen said people "may be receiving unsolicited emails from the Jared Polis campaign.
"We believe their campaign may have illegally obtained our donor email list," Hansen said in the e-mail, acquired by PolitickerCO and the political blog ColoradoPols, which initially reported the story.
Hansen told PolitickerCO the Shafroth campaign became suspicious after the Polis campaign sent two unsolicited e-mails to "a private internal" campaign e-mail address set up specifically to catch unapproved e-mails sent to the mailing list.
More than a dozen personal friends of Shafroth also contacted him to ask why their personal information was being made public, as they were now receiving Polis e-mails, Hansen said.
Asked if the allegations were true, Polis spokesperson Dayna Hanson said, "We haven't taken a list from anyone, Shafroth included."
"Jared Polis is light years ahead of Will in support and fundraising," Hanson said in an e-mail. "What sense would it make for Jared to steal the candidate's list who has raised the least in this race?"
The allegations are the latest salvo in an escalating mudslinging campaign between Polis, Shafroth, and Joan Fitz-Gerald, the third candidate in the CD-2 race.
On March 10, Shafroth's campaign filed an complaint against Polis with the Federal Elections Commission, alleging that Polis' campaign finance reports lacked "transparency."
Polis' campaign responded two days later by filing criminal fraud charges against Shafroth, charging that his campaign intentionally misrepresented donors' occupations in his FEC finance reports.
