Sievers tops Murray in HD 45

One of the mild surprises in the Denver metro area during a weekend of Republican county assemblies was the results for State House 45, where former Douglas County Clerk and Recorder Carole Murray faced off against Teller County GOP Chair Mark Sievers.

In that contest, Sievers took 58% of the vote to Murray’s 42%.

Teller County makes up approximately 28% of the district delegates.

“Probably what happened is that it was late in the day, and Seivers got 100% of the Teller County vote, while Douglas County didn’t have all of their delegates,” said one activist from Douglas County.

The House 45 Assembly convened after the Douglas County Assembly and it’s possible that some of the Douglas County delegates did not stick around to vote in HD 45.

“There are a lot of new people too [attending Assembly],” said one person in attendance on Saturday. “There are a considerable number of people, even in Douglas County who have no idea who Carole Murray is. And there are considerable numbers of people who know her and just don’t like her all that much.”

So presumably it will be Sievers-Murray primary in August for the traditionally conservative seat that includes southern Douglas County and all of Teller County.

However don’t be surprised if a candidate decides to petition on to the ballot between now and June.

Some GOP party activists question both Sievers’ and Murray’s conservative credentials. The one is relatively unknown and the other ran as a moderate in a traditionally conservative county.

The weakness of both candidates is that they aren't considered sufficiently pro-life.

“If we can find another candidate willing to step in that’s really pro-life, don’t be surprised if you get a 3 candidate race,” concluded the Douglas County activist.
