Senate Dems name 2009 committee chairs

The Colorado Senate Democrats announced chair assignments for 10 state Senate committees on Thursday and seven of the 10 appointed Senators are new to the post.

State Sens. Jim Isgar (D-Durango), Paula Sandoval (D-Denver), and Jennifer Veiga (D-Denver) are the only committee chairs who will remain in their positions for next year.

Groff stays Senate president; Boyd upsets Morse for pro tem

Senate President Peter Groff (D-Denver) was named to another term by acclamation, and State Sen. Brandon Shaffer (D-Longmont) was named Senate majority leader, as expected.

But state Sen. Betty Boyd (D-Lakewood) upset state Sen. John Morse (D-Colorado Springs) to become the next Senate president pro tem.

Some female Democratic Senate Caucus members were said to have been peeved that no females would be in Senate Majority leadership next year.

Morse was nominated by current President Pro Tem Abel Tapia (D-Pueblo), who's leaving to seek a seat on the Joint Budget Committee.
