BLM gambling all on Roan

Governor Bill Ritter was hoping that the compromise solution of partly opening the Roan to drilling which he proposed in December would stick. In part we think he was influenced because oil prices were approaching $100 per barrel in December of last year. With oil prices now near $135 per barrel, it'll be a risk for Democrats to weigh in on the subject one way or another.

Mark Udall, D-Eldorado Springs, released the following statement in response to Governor Bill Ritter’s announcement concerning the Roan Plateau:   “I am encouraged by Governor Ritter’s conversations with the U.S. Department of Interior on ways to protect the remaining portions of the Roan Plateau that are not currently leased for oil and gas drilling.   I would have preferred that Congress enact statutory provisions to protect the Roan Plateau, but in the absence of action by Congress I believe the Governor’s approach represents our best opportunity to achieve that goal.
