2008 primary preview: Congressional races

With Primary Day being held Tuesday, PolitickerCO.com takes a look at the four competitive congressional primary races in Colorado.

Will Jared Polis' ad barrage help him trump Joan Fitz-Gerald in the 2nd Congressional District? Can Doug Lamborn do it again in the 5th district over the same names he beat in 2006? Has Mike Coffman really put the 6th District race away? And, oh yeah -- turns out there's a GOP primary in the 1st dstrict, too.

Confident Coffman campaign already looking for general election workers

With the 6th Congressional District primary days away, Mike Coffman’s campaign is clearly feeling good about his chances in the race.

His campaign sent out an e-mail Monday looking for interns for his general campaign office, but it sounded like he was already taking office in Washington.

The e-mail, sent out by Coffman organizational director Jeff Small to 42 College Republicans and others interested in working with the campaign, asserts that Coffman “is the unanimous favorite to win on August 12th.”

“Should this be the case, internships will be immediately available with the strong potential of earning a job in Mike's Congressional office,” the e-mail stated.

“Mike has said he will give first priority to those who work hard with him in the trenches, and now is your chance to show him what you've got!”

The full e-mail, after the jump.

Word on the street, Ward campaign says, is that he's leading

Some 6th Congressional District Republican primary campaigns have commissioned pollsters to survey how the race is playing out.

But Steve Ward's campaign prefers to poll 6th District voters the old-fashioned way: by going door-to-door themselves and asking them.

And what they're hearing, said Ward manager Christine Burtt, is that Ward is leading in the four-man GOP primary with support nearing 30 percent and a two-candidate race is shaping up between him and Colorado Secretary of State Mike Coffman.

Steve Ward poll numbers

Release Date: Aug 1 2008

Regardless our anticipation of the carping of the talking heads, we release our poll numbers for the Steve Ward for Congress campaign.

The Armstrong campaign has released a poll showing they're "in a dead heat" with Coffman.  Neither Armstrong's nor Coffman's numbers bear any resemblance to what we're hearing on the ground.

Does GOP dissatisfaction spell bad news for McCain?

The Rocky Mountain News summarizes yesterday's 6th Congressional District Republican primary debate by noting that "Three of the four GOP hopefuls...lambasted the Republican Party and President George W. Bush."

In particular, State Sen. Ted Harvey (R-Highlands Ranch) criticized President Bush for his support of an immigration bill, which U.S. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) and the Democratic leadership also supported.

Presumably their public statements reflect a similar general dissatisfaction among the Republican primary electorate in the district. Considering Colorado's status as a swing state in this year's presidential election, an ambivalent or discouraged base is the last thing McCain needs.

    CUAC endorses Harvey

Sixth Congressional District Republican candidate Ted Harvey has picked up an endorsement from the Credit Union Association of Colorado, Harvey's campaign announced Tuesday.

“No business group in Colorado has a more impressive and well organized grassroots mobilization network than the Credit Unions," Harvey said in a release sent out Tuesday. "To have their powerful backing combined with my authentic record of conservative leadership means Republican voters will be mobilized in my favor in time for early voting in just a couple of weeks."

In an enclosed CUAC press release dated June 24, CUAC president/CEO John Dill stated that “Ted Harvey understands the important role that credit unions play in providing high-quality financial services to one out of three Coloradoans.

"We are pleased to support his candidacy to serve the people of the 6th District in Congress," Dill said in the release.
