Buescher has 'strong initial interest' in CSU chancellor position

Add Bernie Buescher to the list of potential candidates for Colorado State University chancellor.

The outgoing Democratic state representative from Grand Junction told the Denver Post on Wednesday that he has "strong initial interest" in taking over for Larry Penley, who resigned as CSU president on Nov. 5.

But don't call Buescher "Mr. Chancellor" yet: For one thing, the position hasn't even been formally created yet.

Also, outgoing U.S. Sen. Wayne Allard (R-Loveland) has also been talked about -- and is interested in -- taking the chancellorship.

Allard shuts down Senate website's contact page

Don't bother contacting U.S. Sen. Wayne Allard's Senate office anymore  - at least, not online.

With Congress adjourned for the year and the Loveland Republican retiring in a few months, the "contact" page on Allard's Senate website has been disabled, as first reported by the Colorado Independent.

"The United States Senate has effectively recessed for the remainder of the year, and will not be considering new legislative proposals," a statement posted on the contact page reads. "I am retiring, and so my Senate career has also ended. Accordingly, I feel that your thoughts and views on this matter would be best addressed to my successor. The benefit of hearing from constituents on legislative and governance issues should be extended to Colorado's newest Senator and not archived with me."

Coloradans like their senators

Since direct elections began in Colorado in 1912, there are only four instances of incumbent U.S. Senators losing to challengers. The first time was in 1918 when Lawrence Phipps (R) unseated U.S. Sen. John Shafroth (D). More than four relatively uneventful decades passed until Peter Dominick (R) defeated John Carroll (D) in 1962. In 1972, Floyd Haskell (D) narrowly defeated Gordon Allott (R) only to be unseated six years later by William Armstrong (R).

U.S. Sen. Wayne AllardU.S. Sen. Wayne AllardIt's official: U.S. Sen. Wayne Allard (R-Loveland) is backing Wil Armstrong in the 6th Congressional District Republican primary.

The endorsement, announced Monday, was not a surprise: earlier this month, Allard sent out a fundraising letter on Armstrong's behalf.

"In the many years that my wife Joan and I have known Wil, he has consistently demonstrated his conservative principles as a business leader, as an involved community member, and as a father," Allard said in a statement released Monday. "We need more leaders in Congress who have hired employees and grown businesses in the real world. Wil's business acumen, particularly relating to the current economic woes and financial turbulence, will make an impact in Congress."
