Assistant House Majority Leader Michael Garcia (D-Aurora) resigned Friday following allegations that he exposed himself and made inappropriate advances towards several female lobbyists.
An unnamed female lobbyist alleged that Garcia approached her as they were playing pool at Lancer Lounge on Jan. 7 after a Garcia fundraiser, according to FaceTheState.com, which first released the story.
When Garcia found himself alone with the woman, he allegedly approached her, exposed his genitalia, and asked, "Wouldn't this be real nice inside of you?"
Garcia sent a terse, one-sentence resignation statement to House Speaker Andrew Romanoff (D-Denver) this morning.
Romanoff refused to comment on the matter to reporters Friday morning, though he promised a statement later in the day. He also declined to say whether a formal complaint had even been filed, citing House rules of confidentiality.
But in a short statement on the House floor Friday morning, Romanoff told House members, "You and I took an oath to uphold the constitution, but we also assumed an obligation to uphold the honor of this body.
"Our constituents expect us to do so, both within this building and without," he said.
Garcia's seat will be filled through a vacancy committee; Romanoff will assign Garcia's bills to other sponsors.
House Democrats will caucus next week to elect a new assistant majority leader, according to a statement from Romanoff's office.
