We missed this story when it was published originally on May 19th in High Country News because frankly we don't find the publication very "newsy." Thus we don't read it often.
But thanks to a Wally World reader, the story got pushed to our inbox, and finally, we read it today.
"Dean Singleton, publisher of the Post and chief executive of MediaNews Group Inc.," writes Hal Walter of High Country News, "reportedly threatened to yank financial support from a media-welcoming party before the [Democratic National] convention. The reason? Some organizers, including the rancher and Colorado Sen. Ken Salazar, D, proposed a cattle-drive parade to kick off the convention, and others are considering holding an exhibition rodeo during the event."
So that leads us to two questions:
Firstly, what the heck does Singleton have against cows anyway?
Secondly, and more importantly, what is the largest newspaper in Colorado doing telling the DNC what they can or cannot do? Should any media conglomerate be sponsoring any convention activities whether they are Democrat or Republican or Green Party activities? Doesn't the financial link thus formed cloud the relationship between news media and political parties?
We realize it's a practice engaged in by all news outlets, the sponsoring of political convention activities, but we think it's wrong.
Especially when it's practiced by a guy who just lectured newspaper types about discarding their arrogance.
