Poll: Udall leads Schaffer by 9 points

Democratic U.S. Senate candidate Mark Udall now holds a nine-point lead over his Republican opponent Bob Schaffer, according to a Rasmussen Reports telephone survey. This gain marks the second three-point increase in Udall's lead over Schaffer in the three polls Rasmussen Reports has conducted on the race.

Udall and Schaffer are competing to replace Republican Sen. Wayne Allard, who is retiring this year after two terms in the senate.

A Udall victory would leave Colorado, a state long considered a Republican stronghold, with two Democratic U.S. Senators, Democrats in the governor's and lieutenant governor's office, Democrats in control of both houses of the General Assembly, and Democrats for four of its seven U.S. Representatives.

Colorado will likely be a swing state in the presidential election.

The Rasmussen Reports survey indicates that the candidates to be statistically even among male voters, with Udall enjoying a 16-point lead among women.

The margin of error for the study is four and a half percentage points.
